The Batman.

Description

I worked on the design and animation for the Batmobile, Gordons Laptop, the Riddlers forum's, the Batcave and digagetic poltical stadium graphics for 'Bella reál'. Andrew Poppelstone(CD) and Ashton Hertz(Prod) ran the project with the powerhouse known as Sam Keehan leading Dan Herlihy, myself and Marcel Sobkow on the design work.

The Batmobile. Yeah. Getting to concept design and animate a little screen for the Batmobile is kind of a dream I havent woken up from. Theres nothing else to say.

The Batcave was Sam Keehan and Marcel's lovechild. My role here was supportive, most of my time in the cave was animating per shot and populating using their existing visual language. My design work is most visible in the contact lens footage treatment (in red) as well as some smaller elements in the screens. The whole aesthetic got redesigned at one point and I took compositions from Dan Herlihy's original designs and updated screens using Marcel Sobkows lovely design language.

Gordons laptop was an interesting design challenge, it needed to be old and out of date. It had to look bad, but good while it was doing it. The brilliant Sam Keehan and I went through a fair few colour-ways before we ended up in this retro windows-esc place, it works for me. It was a key story beat, the Riddler gives Gordon and Wayne a clue and their laptop a virus at the same time. I particularly enjoyed the cascade of windows opening. Then from the second laptop sequence,. when they're interrogating the penguin, I always liked the '<?>' cursor activated through the riddlers link. It's a cute touch that I think came straight from the script. Shoutout to Heather Costa whose comp work really sold the whole sequence.

The Riddlers Forums (Above)
I think Matt Reeves wanted a dark-web 4chan style site were the kind of incels who follow the riddler online could meet. It wanted to be lo-fi and 'back-end' in aesthetic and I reckon I got that across. I had no idea they'd zoom in full screen on the comments in the edit like that. Just goes to show you always need to check your kerning.

Election Graphics (Below)
The films climatic moments take place at a 'Bella Real' political rally. I was tasked with animating a suit of stadium graphics for the stage, border screens and jumbotron. Im sure Keehan played a role in this aswell. The base graphics were quite simple and straightforward, its the glitching panels and then as usual great comp work that sells the whole thing. I'd heard Pattison would be swinging all over the jumbotron while I was working on it, and when I saw it in cinemas, I thought, well shit, that'll look great in the reel.
